The
first outing of the year was our participation in the County Music
Festival at Truro Methodist Church. We won our class at this event
but narrowly lost in a 'sing off' against the Mabe Ladies Choir
for the overall winners of the senor choirs class. We travelled
to Carclaze Methodist Church for a concert in early May that was
warmly received. A major effort in May was the recording of our
latest CD at Helston School. The facilities there were superb
and we thank the School for making them available and allowing
us both the the maximum of comfort and good accoustics. Our first
'tour' of the year (i.e. using a coach and including supporters)
was to Looe where we were invited to share a concert with the
local ladies choir, the Looe Valley Singers on 29 May. This was
a very successful event, held in the small but charming Riverside
Church. The following week we shared a concert with the Croydon
Male Voice Choir at Richmond Church in Penzance. This was a long-standing
return visit by the Croydon choir. We have twice accepted their
invitation to sing in a massed choir concert at he Fairfield Halls,
Croydon.
The
Choir put in 4 appearances on the patio at the Princess Pavilion,
Falmouth through the summer. These events are relatively informal
and they are well-supported by locals and by holiday-makers. Social
events included another very successful annual Garden Fete at
the Princess Pavilion (organised by the Ladies Committee) in July.
Other summer concerts were at Carbis Bay Wesley Methodist Church,
at Helston Methodist Church (in support of the Aimee Plant Appeal)
and at the Guildhall, St. Ives with the Camborne Town Band.
Our
2004 Concert Tour took us to East Horsley in Surrey for a 2-night
stay at the Ramada-Jarvis Hotel set in pleasant countryside. The
tour party was about 90 people in two coaches (Plymouth City Coaches).
The first concert (Friday 10 September) was with the Weybridge
Male Voice Choir in the new Catholic Church there - with excellent
facilities and acoustics. The audience was about 400 strong and
over approx. £1300 was raised for charity. Saturday was
spent at Hampton Court Palace in superb weather. In the evening
we shared a concert with the Hart MVC at The Maltings, Farnham.
This was also very successful. We travelled back using 'the scenic
route' via Bournemouth. We were pleased that the comments of our
supporters indicated that they had a very good time (always one
of the best test of a tour's success).
The
tour was followed by concerts at Mawnan Methodist Church, Troon
Village Hall and Gwennap Church. The latter was a British Legion
Remembrance Day concert with the Carharrack & St. Day Band.
We then spent a highly sucessful weekend with the Audley MVC (from
Audley, Staffs.) with concerts at Newquay and Stithians. The Mullion
Feast Day concert followed this. Our Gala Concert for 2004 was
held at the Princess Pavilion, Falmouth on Sunday 21st November.
Our guests were the St. Keverne Youth Band and Philip Hunt (of
Radio Cornwall's Sounds of Brass) was the compere. We completed
the year's engagements with the carol service at Stithians Methodist
Church and an evening at the Village Hall.
It
is a pleasure to thank the visiting soloists who have performed
with us throughiout the year (in approximate order of appearance):
Karen Hurn, Maggi Holden, Alison Harvey, Angela Thomas, Margaret
Green, John and Rosemary Heard and Jacka Jazz. We aso thank our
loyal supporters whose presence we much appreciate, both 'at home'
and 'away'.
