International Male Voice Choral Festival
Cornwall
hosted the first ever International Male Voice Choral Festival in 2003
from 1 - 5 May. It was organised by Dr. Roy Wales. The programme featured
prestigious Festival Gala Concerts involving four to six choirs, an
International Male Voice Choral competition in two sections for choirs
up to 40 singers and choirs of 41 singers and above. Our Choir competed
in the smaller class. The festival was based in Truro with the Cathedral
and the Hall for Cornwall being the main venues. Concerts also took
place in all parts of Cornwall from Bude to Penzance, including the
Eden Project. Eight choirs from overseas, 10 from the UK and 28 Cornish
choirs participated together with a specially-formed Cornish Festival
Chorus.
The
second Festival was staged between 28th April and 2 May 2005.
Fifty choirs participated, including 9 from Continental Europe. St.
Stythians MVC entered the competition for Choirs of 40 Voices and under
and participated in the final Gala Concert in the Hall for Cornwall.
We gained 5th place of 13 in the competition and won the trophy for
Best Cornish Choir in the class.
The
Third Festival was held in May 2007. The Choir was asked to sing
the winning entry in the composers' competition. This was Whenever
There's a Life to Save by Tony
Cliff of Falmouth.
The Fourth Festival (29 April - 4 May 2009) was held under the
direction of Peter Davies. Our Choir hosted a Regional Gala Concert
at Newquay with the Hermitage Ensemble (St. Petersburg, Russia), the
Alcester MVC and the Men of Good Fortune (Cornwall). We also competed
in the class for choirs of 41 and more singers (i.e. moving up to the
class for larger choirs). The results for this class were:
